statement

Visitors to Susan's studio often comment that it looks as though the walls were filled with several different artists' works! That's because Susan creates in a multitude of media: painting, collage, iconography and sewing, among others. But her work expresses its unity through her interest in animals and plants, topography and spirituality. It achieves its characteristic textures and colors through her combinations of material and technique. Its focus dwells upon the intersections of layers of images and meanings, and how they may conceal and reveal one another.

Paper is of primary importance in Susan’s work not just as a surface for paint, but also as a sculptural element for its ability to be torn and sewn. Integrating paper with other materials, including beeswax, thread and gold leaf, Susan creates structures at once transparent and opaque. Often the written word, overt or liminal, appears in her work.

Susan received a BA of Studio Art/Art History from Franklin & Marshall College, and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She has recently exhibited her work at Concord Art, Concord, Mass.; The Art Center, Dover, N.H.; Chandler Gallery, Cambridge; and in private collections worldwide. She paints religious icons for churches and individuals, and is available for commissions and icon workshops.
