While I was in Ireland for a month teaching and painting, I made some new work. I wanted to use my body differently and find a new departure point. I started by taking photos of the ‘footsteps’ of the wind on the sand, on the water, in the grass, and the games the wind played with my hair. I looked closely at the unusual shapes of the limestone rocks etched by the acid rain, the shapes of the spaces between the farmer’s hand-built walls, the shifting light, the sun in the sea, the feeling of the ever-changing weather against my body, and the feeling of being in a new place. In the studio, I translated this into paint (at times mixed with beach sand) without preciousness. The action of painting was like hallucinating or a stream of consciousness that came from deep in my core. My current work is an extension of this exploration.

I teach at Northeastern University’s College of Arts, Media and Design and am represented by Gallery NAGA.
